At A Gallery we understand that before an artist can achieve aesthetic brilliance in a contemporary style he must first be technically competent in representing the physical world - after all the most beauty that is possible is contained within nature.
Therefore we admire and want to support artists with exceptional technical ability.
The National Portrait Gallery in London hosts the worlds largest portrait prize - www.npg.org.uk/bp-portrait-award-20091.php
Every year more than 1,000 fine figurative artists from the UK and Europe submit their paintings for consideration and a world class panel of judges select around 30 artists to take part. It's a £25,000 top prize - so the stakes are high!
For more than a decade A Gallery has attended this exhibition and selected artists to display from it. Actually we have shown 3 1st Prize winners and 2 Travel Award winners in the last decade - before they won!
The artists shown in this prize are the very best figurative painters in the UK and so we decided to do an exhibition dedicated to them. These are artists who have dedicated their lives to mastering the art of the portrait and through that dedication have risen to the top amongst all the the figurative painters in Europe.
