Shalon Goss was born in Glendale, California, with blue eyes, pale hair and
alabaster skin; she spent many years in front of the camera for her artistic
mother, but finally found her own comfort zone behind the lens. And so it
was, with her first camera, her love of photography was born.
Goss is loyal to shooting the old-fashioned way, and mostly uses film to
capture her visual renderings. She says, ³I love the honestly of film and
the untouched quality of a final darkroom print, even if it has been
touched.² Having followed bravely into the world of art in her brother¹s
footsteps, Goss began shooting in her early teens. She traveled the world
with camera in tow in search of a different perspective to portray the
people and places she would see.
Goss traveled to Ireland in the winter of 2003 where she spent a couple of
months residing in a large drafty castle in Tipperary County where she shot
her self-portrait, ³Woman Reclining on Sofa.² It was this photo that sparked
her first series, which was shown as a solo exhibition in Los Angeles in
2004.
³The Boxing Gloves,² also a part of her first series, aptly joins beauty
with brawn and merges softness with strength, leaving you asking the
question, ³is it really true, can a woman have both?² This photograph was
dedicated by the artist to her brother, Bryten Goss, a contemporary
figurative painter who died after a sudden illness October 26, 2006; he was
just 30 years-old.
View Goss¹ work and you will see naked and semi-clad representations of
women, yes, but more importantly you will find yourself participating in the
composition; one of the highest honors given to the viewer. Look closely at
the intimate photographs taken by the artist and you will see what she sees
through her eyes.
